We’ve already talked about CBD and Chronic pain and some of its physical healing properties. Now, it’s time to delve deeper into CBD’s potential for supporting mental wellness.
On top of CBD’s many physical healing properties, it is also shown to have positive impacts on some users’ emotional and psychological health. Recent studies suggest that CBD can help manage the symptoms of a number of anxiety, panic, and stress disorders.
How can CBD work to alleviate stress and anxiety?
Many of the stress responses in the human body come from the Central Nervous System (CNS). Because the endocannabinoid system plays such a big role in regulating the CNS, it’s no wonder that CBD can help reduce acute or chronic symptoms of stress and anxiety.
Like many aspects of CBD, there is still a lot more to be understood on the specifics of how CBD soothes anxiety and other mood-related issues. CBD experts are currently unsure on how exactly CBD interacts with ECS receptors in the brain. However, there are already many scientific studies displaying positive results of CBD use.
One 2011 study found that CBD was helpful in treating social anxiety disorder (SAD). Subjects who were given CBD experienced signifiacntly reduced anxiety levels compared to subjects who were given a placebo.
Other studies on animal models suggested CBD’s anxiolytic effects, including reducing physiological factors of anxiety such as high heart rate.
Overall, current research suggests CBD’s success in treating a large array of anxiety-related disorders, including:
CBD proponents have not only made their case in the science world, but in politics as well. In 2015, the director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse appeared before the U.S. Senate’s drug caucus to vouch for the therapeutic potential of CBD. Her testimony included strong claims that CBD showed promise not only in treating physical conditions, but anxiety as well.
While we’re talking about CBD’s use for stress and anxiety, it’s important to note it’s success in treating another common disorder in mental health.
For many people, CBD might be a useful tool in managing symptoms of depression.
On top of reducing anxiety via the ECS, CBD might also alter serotonin signals.Lack of seretonin, a key neurotransmitter influencing mental health, often leads to depression. CBD’s potential ability to modulate seretonin transmission in the brain might explain a lot about how the compound can have a positive effect on mood.
Increased serotonin levels often minimize symptoms of depression, and can even reduce anxiety in conjunction.
Many victims of anxiety, depression, and other mental health disorders turn to physicatric treatment. Selective seretonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) constitute perhaps the most common drug class prescribed for anxiety and depression. These medications work by blocking the reabsorption of serotonin to increase its levels in the brain.
While SSRIs have proven helpful to many people, they are also notorious for having undesirable side effects.
Based on prelimary studies on CBD’s interaction with serotonin, it might be possible for some people to supplement a prescription SSRI with CBD. For people who shy away from SSRIs due to its hash side effects, CBD might serve as a positive alternative for treating anxiety and depression.
Of course, you should always discuss mental health treatment plans with a doctor. If you feel that CBD would be a good approach to treating your symptoms of stress, anxiety, or depression, we encourage you to speak with a medical professional for more guidance.
