CBD Guide Chapter 4

CBD and Chronic Pain

Someone who has never used CBD before might be skeptical that a naturally derived compound can be so effective in addressing issues such as chronic pain. But in fact, one of the most common uses of CBD is for the alleviation of chronic pain.

Uncovering the properties of CBD explains why it can be so effective in soothing chronic pain.

Types of Pain that Respond to CBD

As of now, scientific understanding of how CBD alleviates pain is incomplete. While there is still much room for more research on why and how CBD effectively treats pain, current studies do suggest that CBD is proven to reduce pain related to a wide variety of conditions.

Concrete data might not yet be available to back up CBD’s success in pain relief. However, most scientific researchers do agree that this does not negate the effectiveness of CBD.

Some of the common types of pain that CBD can reduce include:

  • Arthritis

  • Migraines

  • Cancer-related pain

  • Fibromyalgia

  • Muscle Aches

  • Some autoimmune diseases

IBS and other gut-related problems

Reducing Pain by Reducing Inflammation

While studies on how exactly CBD interacts with the body are still developing, we do have a basic understanding of how it works. CBD is known to reduce pain by reducing inflammation.

As you may remember from chapter 3, the human body processes CBD in the endocannabinoid system (ECS). When CBD triggers cannabinoid receptors in the ECS, the reduction of inflammation in the muscles, joints, and throughout other parts of the body can provide strikingly quick pain relief.

CBD’s success in reducing inflammation makes it especially beneficial in the treatment of arthirtis. In one study, rats with arthritis were administered topical CBD for 4 days. During the trial, measurements showed that the rats experienced significantly reduced swelling of the joints and spinal cord.

Topical CBD for Pain Relief

Topical Application of CBD is another mode that has proven effective in inflammation reduction. This method allows patients to apply CBD creams, oils, and sprays directly to an effected area, such as sore muscles or joints. These products typically work by permeating the skin and quickly reaching pain points.

Some CBD users suffering from chronic pain prefer to utilize topical products because of their direct application and effectiveness. Users can target specifc areas of pain and experience immediate relief after application.
