Does CBD Help Anxiety?

With over 40 million U.S. adults diagnosed with anxiety, it’s no wonder that so many people are turning to CBD for stress relief. CBD might hit all the marks when it comes to being all-natural, non-habit-forming, and readily available to anyone in the U.S. over 21. Additionally, many people report CBD’s effectiveness in managing a wide range of symptoms. But you might be wondering–does CBD help anxiety?

According to recent scientific research studies, there’s a well of evidence suggesting that CBD may be effective in managing anxiety. Keep reading for insight into CBD for stress relief.

CBD and Anxiety–Research Findings

There are multiple research studies that suggest CBD can be effective in reducing symptoms related to anxiety.

One 2015 study found that CBD produced positive results in test subjects with a variety of different anxiety-related conditions. The study included people who were completely undiagnosed, people with Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD), Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). After administering the CBD, the overall result showed a decrease in stress responses and an effect of relaxation.

In another study, researchers gained more answers as to why CBD might produce this calming effect. It appears that CBD interacts with a number of receptors in the brain including the cannabinoid type 1 receptor (CB1R), and the serotonin 5-HT1A receptor. It also interacts with additional receptors that regulate emotions like fear, and anxiety-induced behaviors.

Before this, findings in 2010 revealed that CBD not only helped to reduce anxiety, but may alter the brain’s initial reaction to anxiety triggers. Brain scans from the study depicted blood flow patterns in parts of the brain that control stress. When administering CBD, the blood flow patterns changed and suggested reduced stress.

CBD and Other Mental Health Disorders

CBD’s potential to interact with brain receptors and blood flow may also make it effective in use with other mental health disorders. It’s possible that CBD may provide relief from symptoms associated with depression, OCD, and other psychological diagnoses.

CBD, Anxiety, and Pets

If you are considering utilizing CBD for stress relief, you might also be wondering if CBD is strictly for humans. The answer is no!

Believe it or not, CBD can also be used for our pets, like cats and dogs. In fact, many people utilize CBD for managing signs of stress in dogs. CBD may also be used to alleviate chronic pain symptoms in pets.

If you are looking to utilize CBD to reduce signs of stress in dogs, or to treat a cat with anxiety, it only requires a few simple steps:

  • First, decide when you are going to administer CBD. This may be before you know a stressful situation will occur, such as before taking your pet in the car.
  • Then, determine the dosing. Most CBD products will have dosing instructions on the packaging, but if you can’t find that, look up how much CBD your pet should take based on its weight.
  • Administer the CBD carefully and gently. If your pet does not like the taste, consider adding it to their food, or trying out a pet-specific CBD product that is flavored to your pet’s liking.
