A year in review–The biggest research findings on CBD in 2021

As hemp has become more and more popular, there has been a call for more research to provide insight into what CBD is truly capable of as a compound. There is now more government funding and private investment being dedicated to this topic than ever before. So, let’s discuss some of the biggest findings in research from this year.

1.) CBD acts directly within the brain to reduce pain

This year it was discovered that CBD works to mitigate pain by interacting with the nucleus accumbens within the brain, which is linked to pain processing and response. In this study, CBD was inserted into the nucleus accumbens of rats and their pain sensitivity was measured.

The rats that had been medicated with CBD showed decreased levels of pain from the rats untreated with CBD. This study indicates that CBD can reduce pain at a brain-level, rather than just lessening inflammation at the site of the wound.

2.) Study indicates that CBD has neuroprotective effects

Recently, researchers have investigated the preventive effects of CBD in dealing with stroke damage in rats. CBD was given 30 minutes before and many hours after a stroke to protect against brain cell loss, structural damage, and memory impairment.

These promising findings emphasize the potential benefits of CBD for high-risk patients.

3.) CBD may help dogs manage aggression

Shelter dogs were given CBD oil for 45 days and their aggressive behavior toward their human handlers was examined in a recent study.  All of the canines in the CBD treatment group responded well to the CBD and showed no negative side effects.

The amount of aggressive behavior in the dogs treated with CBD was reduced, the advantages being most noticeable after 45 days of exposure.  While more research is needed to truly confirm that CBD can be used to reduce aggression in dogs definitively, the results of this study indicate that CBD may be of therapeutic use for our pets.

As interest in CBD grows, there will only be more research and clinical studies conducted. Medical researchers hope to further their knowledge about how CBD works so that it can be used confidently to treat a wide range of conditions, such as anxiety, chronic pain, and other disorders.
